Evaluation

Introduction

I'm going to discuss the setup and the audio recording of my podcast I am also going to talk about podcasts that influenced me and compare how I could make my podcast better by talking about different elements that ended up creating my podcast.

Idea

As soon as got this brief I wanted to make a video podcast as they have become one of my favourite things to watch in my spare time so the idea creating process was easy but what was difficult was the content creating process.

I decided to look at shows such as prime minister question time as the question answer system seemed a good way to create discussion during the production of the podcast, but I realised that by only using a question and answer system could prove to be boring and make my listeners uninterested in the rest of my podcast.

To help solve this problem is by thinking what I want my audience to feel as they listen to this and instantly I knew what I wanted to make the audience feel. that is Relaxed, happy and somewhat at peace as overall, I want to make them feel like they were hanging out with their friends.

So, I looked at what helps me feel like this and it was my favourite video podcast The Misfits Podcast

The reason this podcast makes me feel this way is because the way they act such as being as non-formal as possible and just having a laugh talking about their lives and their past as well talking about subjects that they personally are interested in these topics.

Another reason is their set which in itself is stunning and inspiring as its littered with memorabilia of their lives and the content they create on their separate YouTube channels which itself inspires conversation itself. all this reminds of a pub with all the old memorabilia of its past on the walls and on the tables just like the misfits set.

And I hoped that in my podcast I could do kind of the same for my set but it ended up not being as good as I wanted it to be as I decorated the table with my Xbox controllers to help to relate to the subjects talked about in the podcast. As I obviously don't have the same production budget as the misfits but if I try and make my set look like a relaxing space it would help to achieve what I want my audience feel.

Research/Planning

The most important thing about a podcast is the content of the podcast. We discussed about gaming and clothing such as supreme and north face that is relatable to my target audience which is 15-30yr olds. as gaming is relatable to 15-year-old as you reach that age and especially with boys’ gaming is the centre of your culture as most guys are gaming for about 80% of the time. But From the ages 15-22 then you hit adulthood and you get a job and then clothes and looking good becomes focus.

The reason this is applicable is because my project hit the projected target audience described in my planning and my research.

what I could've done to improve the content of my project is by creating a second questionnaire that centred around expanding my understanding what brings an audience to a show. Doing that I could've improved the overall success of my project by expanding my audience to women and older ages by talking about the news such as Brexit or Donald Trump just like in the Russell Howard show.

I looked at his show in my ideas page as an example of using the events of the world to make content and comedy which he does quite successfully in my opinion. This part of my ideas page inspired my idea of making a more comedic and relaxed podcast as it would be more fun to produce and inspire more exciting topics that will again expand my audience demographic.

I also received feedback to look at my studio and crew design which I have detailed previously in this paragraph and my planning section.

Production

What went well in my production phase of my project.

I thought the filming of the project went off without a hitch and that we kept an interesting flow of conversation and laughter throughout the filming.  As well as hitting the projected run time of an hour and over shooting it by 20 minuets which was great in the sense that I had plenty of footage to edit to make a short compilation of the best bits of the podcast for upload to YouTube.

what could've been improved on was using camera operators for the filming section as we used a rec run setup for our timecode on the Panasonic's and just started and stopped them at the beginning and end of the recording.

Also, if I had camera man they could monitor the mic audio for me Lewis and Liam as I ran into a problem during post when Lewis mic was peaking as well as having a slight distortion to his voice.

the way I solved this problem is during post I completely ditched Lewis’s audio and just used mine and Liam's audio as Lewis can be head on Liam’s radio mic as it was able to pick him up on his mic which saved my production.

What should definitely be improved for the future is the set as it was quite bland compared to the misfits set and what I originally wanted it to look like.

I originally wanted to use a black table cloth and use mics on small stands with pop filters and attached to headphones which would've helped with the audio problem. also, I would've used some mood lighting such as a soft yellow light around 2000 Kelvin to help resemble a warm and relaxed environment.

But what in reality It was radio mic and a red table cloth which didn't look at all what I wanted it to be and that is due to my personal time management which I've always had a problem with. The way I could improve my time management is by making a list or a schedule for each section of my production.

Post production

I ran into a few problems during post production and one Is editing on a multi-cam setup which seemed pretty simple but I ran into too many problems.

when I started editing I had to edit the compilation in 2 parts for 2 subjects of conversation in the podcast and then put them in one timeline to finish the edit off with colour correction and white balancing and then adding graphics which I quite simple but the main problem occurs close to exporting it.

What happened was when I changed from Mac to pc the computer thought that out of the 3 cameras (each having different shots) cam 2 replaced all of cam 3s footage with its own footage and then in the edited timeline the footage was gone.

The way I fixed it was by importing all of cam 3s footage and placing it into the processed clip bin for both sequences then synced those clips by audio witch then put the multi am timeline back to normal and fixing the edit.

What I learnt from this problem Is that I need to keep backups of the timeline just encase one corrupts itself so it dost interfere with my projected timeline of this project. I also need to keep clean bins when editing so I know where all clips graphics and audio are located.

What I've learnt/Conclusion

from the start of this project I have learnt some new techniques such as jam syncing which is key to having a multi cam setup as it makes the editing setup more streamline by just using the 1,2,3 keys on your keyboard which made it easier for me and took a lot of stress off me.

In conclusion this project has been a helpful learning tool as I have learnt how to create a multi cam project and also create a multi cam setup and from the combination of my research, planning, idea and production page I have hopefully met all the requirements for the project.

If I was going to make a video podcast again I would definitely improve my planning and equipment used for the podcast.

Feedback

I have been suggested for my future projects to use After effects as its a program I haven't touched yet and using that software could improve my grade in my FMP and other future projects.

  1. After the creation of this podcast I realised that the theory I used (uses and gratification) didn't relate as much as it could so in the future I should look more in depth in the uses of theory in a media production.
